IGRC sustainability toolkit is live and accessible
The working group for sustainability has jointly developed a toolkit for industry best practice and published under the following link. https://www.igrivercruise.com/s/IGRC-Sustainability-toolkit_-Industry-best-practices_1225-zre7.pdf
The inland navigation sector stands at a pivotal moment. As the world accelerates its transition toward a more sustainable future, we in the river cruise industry recognize both the responsibility and the opportunity to lead by example. River cruising, by its nature, is closely connected to the regions it touches and capable of being measured, managed, and improved in real time. But this is only the beginning.
At IGRC, our commitment goes beyond compliance. We envision a future where sustainability is not a challenge, but a defining strength of our industry. This ‘Sustainability Toolkit’ represents a collective effort to turn that vision into action. It provides inspiration for operators, partners, and policymakers to navigate the complex landscape of climate regulation, energy innovation, waste management, and social responsibility.
Developed in collaboration with our members and stakeholders, this toolkit is more than a document, it is a call to partnership. It demonstrates how our industry is working together to achieve real, measurable progress. From investing in alternative fuels and OPS capabilities, to safeguarding our waterways and fostering inclusive, safe working environments, the river cruise community is aligning itself with the goals of the European Green Deal, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the growing expectations of travellers worldwide.
We believe that sustainable cruising starts with collaboration. That’s why this platform will continue to evolve - with webinars, working groups, and knowledge-sharing initiatives supporting an industry-wide shift toward 2030 and beyond. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that future generations can continue to experience the beauty of our rivers in a way that respects the communities, ecosystems, and histories they represent. We also appreciate any feedback, corrections and additions to the text, and will gladly adjust regularly with new findings.
Let this toolkit serve as both - a guide and a commitment. Together, we can define the future of sustainable inland navigation.
